X-medics offers a wide range of medical grade tantalum (ASTM F 560 / ISO 13782) wire to be used in fabrication tantalum markers and other tantalum devices. To satisfy individual customer needs we offer the wire material in the following forms:
- Annealed tantalum wire (on spool)
- Unannealed tantalum wire (on spool)
- Tantalum rods (3 feet / 914 mm long).
Products on-spool are a good option for fully automated operations, whereas the 3 foot long rods made from straightened and ground wire have been optimized for manual tantalum machining or semi-automated processing.

Diamater Tolerance
X-medics standard diameter tolerance is +/- 0.005 mm for smaller diameters and +/- 0.010 mm for larger wire diameters. X-medics’ tolerances are tighter than normal industry standards and optimized for advanced automated processing into e.g. tantalum pin markers.
Tantalum Specification
Surgical unalloyed (pure) tantalum metal is available in two grades – R05200 (electron beam / vacuum arc melted) and R05400 (sintered). Tantalum UNS R05200 and Tantalum UNS R05400 are equally suitable for surgery. The two products have identical requirements concerning max metallic contents of e.g. niobium, iron, titanium, tungsten, nickel and molybdenum. The R05400 product are allowed a slight higher oxygen content. The mechanical properties are almost similar.

Annealed vs Unannealed Wire
X-medics’ wire on spool is available in either annealed or unannealed conditions.. Annealed material is softer and more ductile and suitable for plastic deformation. Unannealed products on the other hand are suitable for machining operations like cutting, grinding, drilling etc.
Tantalum Machining
Machining of tantalum with operations like turning and grinding is in general difficult. Lubrication medium is often required. Typically unannealed tantalum qualities are easier to machine than annealed metals. X-medics further offer unannealed straightened wire rods of tantalum, that may be easier to handle than material on spool.

3rd Party Material Testing
Optionally X-medics’ products are tested by an independent accredited laboratory to confirm that the tantalum satisfies the requirements of ASTM F560 / ISO 13782 and is suitable for medical device fabrication. A copy of the report is provided with the shipments from X-medics. The laboratory analyses the chemical and mechanical characteristics of the wire and compare them again the tantalum grade standards.

Conflict Free Sourcing
All X-medics’ tantalum products are conflict-free. X-medics only works with suppliers that can show evidence for a continuously 3rd party auditing performed by independent auditors appointed by Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition (www.eicc.info) or similar recognized bodies. Proper origin of the materials and compliance Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act conflict minerals is required documented, typically by a conflict-free smelter identification number, this documentation can be tracked on the certificate that follows any shipment from X-medics. X-medics does not use tantalum minerals with origin in the DRC Congo or other conflict areas covered by the law.
