Tantalum Ball Grade – Specifications

There are no industry-specific standards available for tantalum ball grades.  Traditionally, ball grades for tantalum have been adapted from steel ball production. Commonly the standards ABMA (previous A.F.B.M.A), ISO 3290 and DIN 5401 are used. The ball grades have been developed for ball bearing balls, are used to grade non-steel balls as well.

For specialized materials like tantalum, the specified ball grade only references the basic ball diameter. The surface roughness of a tantalum bead can therefore not be expected fulfilled according to steel specification.
